Why is the Platinum Rule so important to small business success?

When I wrote my book Celebrating Success! Fourteen Ways to a Successful Company, I document the 14 principles that small companies implement to be successful.

I found this was creating problems for some clients because they would take just one of the 14 principles and try to implement it in their business without understanding the interrelationship of all 14 principles. The book did not address this interrelationship.

One client reorganized a department based on the information in my book Celebrating Success! Fourteen Ways to a Successful Company. When we discussed it, I suggested to him the types of problems it would cause in his business if he did not look at the bigger picture. He made the changes anyway. Six months later, he came back and told me that everything I told him would happen, DID, IN FACT, HAPPEN. We spent the next six months correcting the problems that were introduced.

As a result, I knew there had to be a better way.  I started to look for a way to tie all 14 principles together in a cohesive strategy that was easy, understandable and effective. The Platinum Rule was exactly what I was looking for.

The Platinum Rule allows me to create a common theme that tied all the principles together.

What changes have you made in your business that did not get you the desired results because you did not look at the bigger picture? I call this the Law of Unintended Consequences. When looking to make changes in your business, be sure to understand the entire picture to ensure you are getting the outcomes you desire.
